Subject: [*] BoloStar 1.1
Here is v1.1 of BoloStar. For those of you who don't know, BoloStar is a
full-featured map editor for the popular tank game Bolo. There are many,
many features to this editor, all of which I will leave to the
documentation for explanation.
Requirements
-----------
* System 7.0 and Color QuickDraw.
* 1Mb or better memory for application to run in.
What's New?
----------
Additions:
* New preference for AutoZooming new windows
* Moving selection marquee
* Several minor editing enhancements
Fixes:
* Pillbox aggressiveness has been normalized at startup
* Fixed bug which allowed people without Color QD to launch
* Map-centering algorithm now works properly
We've received a very warm response from the Bolo community, and we would
like to once again thank all of those people who have sent complaints or
suggestions to us. Please continue to help us bring you the best editor
available by keeping in contact with K&D Software, Inc. Send any bugs,
comments, questions, suggestions, or complaints to:
rudman@engin.umich.edu
keithfry@engin.umich.edu
BTW, it may be a good idea to throw away your old preferences file before
launching v1.1. It won't hurt you if you don't, but it might make things a
little smoother.

BoloStar News
------------
BoloStar's authors are still working hard to bring you better map tools.
The current target is to obtain the following features:
o Fractal Island Generator - this will make realistic islands simple to
make
o Outlining - this will allow you to "outline" a selected object with
whatever.
o Multiple Zoom - we're working to make more levels of zoom available to
you.
o PenSizer - this will allow for drawing multiple-cells at the same time.
o MapPrint - this will allow you to print your maps in full-color
o UserStart - make your own starter positions or let BoloStar pick them for
you
o PlayersView - view the map the way you'ld see it on your Bolo screen!
o New authoring scheme - will allow your name to appear in the Get Info box
============================================================================
===
BoloStar carries a $10 ShareWare fee. Please help us keep the cost of
software down by contributing the fee if you find you like BoloStar. Those
who have already registered, you may use your serial numbers with version
1.1 without problem.
Thanks again.

Programmers 3D GrafSys Vers 1.21 now available.
Version 1.21 is mainly a bugfix for THINK C users. THIS VERSION
NOW RUNS WITH THINK C, I PROMISE! The Docs now contain a chapter for
C programmers on how to use the GrafSys. If you have problems, feel free
to contact me.
The other change is that I removed the FastPerfTrig calls from
the FPU version to make it run faster.
Those of you who don't know what all this is about, read on.
********
Programmers 3D GrafSys -- What it is:
------------------------------------
Didn't you always have this great game in mind where you needed some way of
drawing three-dimensional scenes?
Didn't you always want to write this program that visualized the structure
of three-dimensional molecules?
And didn't the task of writing your 3D conversions routines keep you from
actually doing it?
Well if the answer to any of the above questions is 'Yes, but what has it to
do with this package???' , read on.
GrafSys is a THINK Pascal/C library that provides you with simple routines
for building, saving, loading (as resources), and manipulating
(independent rotating around arbitrary achses, translating and scaling)
three dimensional objects. Objects, not just simple single-line drawings.
GrafSys supports full 3D clipping, animation and some (primitive) hidden-
line/hidden-surface drawing with simple commands from within YOUR PROGRAM.
GrafSys also supports full eye control with both perspective and parallel
projections (If you can't understand a word, don't worry, this is just showing
off for those who know about it. The docs that come with it will try to
explain
what it all means later on).
GrafSys provides a powerful interface to supply your own drawing routines with
data so you can use GrafSys to do the 3D transformations and your own routines
to do the actual drawing. (Note that GrafSys also provides drawing routines so
you don't have to worry about that if you don't want to)
GrafSys 1.11 comes in two versions. One for the 881 and 020 or above
processors. The other version uses fixed-point arithmetic and runs on any
Mac.
Both versions are *100% source compatibel*.
GrafSys comes with an extensive manual that teaches you the fundamentals of 3D
graphics and how to use the package.
If demand is big enough I will convert the GrafSys to an object-class
library.
However, I feelt that the way it is implemented now makes it easier to use for
a lot more people than the select 'OOP-Guild'.
GrafSys is free for any non-commercial usage. Read the documentation
enclosed.
Enjoy,
Christian Franz

Version Histoy
Vers 1.21 -- NOW REALLY THINK C COMPATIBLE
Yep, I compiled it with the uRuntime.lib. AND I removed
the calls to FastPerfTrig in the FPU version. That's all, folks.
Well, I also wrote an additional chapter in the docs for C users...
Vers. 1.2 -- Now THINK C compatible
After a few people told me about their problems using the GrafSys with
THINK C, I removed all calls to Pascal's New procedure and any trig
function. The trig calls are replaced by calls to my own super-fast trig
package (included in GrafSys) that use look-up tables.
Other than that, I added procedures to deallocate 3D objects and screen
objects, something that many people demanded.
Vers. 1.11 -- Now contains C headers
Finally, some kind soul send me the headerfiles for using the GrafSys with
THINK C.
Another change is that I removed over 192 typoos from the documentation.
Quite a score, eh? Thanks to all who reminded me that there are such
fantastic
little programs as spelling checkers (I'm not using one for this posting...
obviously!).
Vers 1.1 -- Fixed point arithmetic
Literally hundrets of people asked me to change the requirements for GrafSys
from 030/881 CPU/FPU to normal 68000 processor no FPU. They pointed out that
I could use the fast Fixed-Point arithmetic. I did this and the result is the
GrafSys Vers 1.1
Vers 1.0 -- Initial Release
What I'm working on:
% faster Polygons for fast hidden-surface animation (almost done)
% a 3D circle/oval type
% better support for offscreen drawing in the Screen3D module

Subject: [*] Infinity Windoid v2.2
The attached file contains a wdef for windoids that supports most of the
features that the system's regular wdef provides. Troy Gaul (the author) is
releasing it public domain, in the hopes that more packages will use it
instead of some of the black and white windoid that are now out there (just
adding this to some existing programs improves the appearance of their
interface a lot). The source code is included, along with a Makefile for
MPW, and a Project file for Think C.
Features include: Supports System 7-style coloring of windows. In System
7, the tinge color set by the user in the Color control panel is used.
Close box can be enabled from NewWindow by setting goAwayFlag. Zoom box
(special case) is implemented. Title bar can appear along the left of the
window. For MacApp users, the left/top behavior of the proc ID can be
switched. System 6 coloring scheme is also supported (can be set in Kolor
or a similar control panel). In System 7, the windoid will be drawn
correctly even when it crosses monitors of differing depths. In System 7,
indexed color tables are checked to see if there are enough different
colors to display the color version (like the system WDEF).

Subject: 'Real world' effect of Daystar in LC
Netters,
A couple of weeks back, Larry Rymal (lrymal@tenet.edu) asked about the effect
of adding a Daystar PowerCache accelerator to an LC, since he was
contemplating either accelerating his machine or upgrading to an LCIII.
Since at that time I had just ordered a 33 MHz PowerCache /w FPU I offered to
do some 'real world' tests on the non- vs. the accelerated machine. Last
Friday I got my accelerator and performed some tests, the results of which I
sent to Larry. He replied that he thought some of you would also be interested
in the results and suggested I'd forward them to info-mac; so here they are
FWIW.
Setup:
> LC 10/40 /w Autodoubler
> 8bit greyscale (512k VRAM)
> 16MHz 68020-16MHz68882 vs 33 MHz 68030-33MHz68882 (Daystar PowerCache)
Test:

So there it is. Hope that it is of some use to someone. Rest me to say that I
(disclaim disclaim) have no connection with Daystar whatsoever. Until now
(I've only had the darn thing for three days :) I am quite satisfied with the
results, especially the responsiveness of the machine (particularly when
writing in Nisus, which would sometimes lag behind my actions, as in: double
click on a word, wait approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of a second and then see the
word highlighted) has much improved. This will no doubt be due to the static
RAM cache as well as the speed boost.

I have had the same problem last year -- cf Info-Mac v10 #141. Here is my
last message and summary about the problem:
------begin included------
I would like to thank publicly all the people who have responded to my call
for help, both publicly (on the list) and privately. The best indication I
got was a private e-mail from Bill Maslin who writes (I have not asked his
permission for reproducing this, I hope I have not committed a felony):
"Apple mice manufactured in Taiwan between Oct and Dec
1990...are...susceptible
to a defect that makes pressing the mouse button have no effect." These mice
have eleven digit serial numbers between LT043xxxxxx and LT051xxxxxx. "The
program offers free replacement through March 23, 1994." (MacWeek 02/24/92,
page 4).
This is exactly the case with my mouse, #LT043DRZC22. I hope Apple France
have heard about this!!!
The brunt of my posting however, is the *second* point of my message, to which
I have got ZERO replies. Can somebody help?
Many thanks
~=michel eytan@dpt-info.u-strasbg.fr
------end included---------
To make a long story short, I finally obtained from Apple France a free
mouse replacement, but they refuse to admit there is defective mice problem
and only did 'it to preserve our good relationship with a customer'...!!!

Hi!
I have serious problems with my Apple HD-Floppy.
The Write/Read Head is dejustated (unable to write or read or format

already one was in action (I know, stupid fault).
The local Apple-Support says, the only (and really expensive) solution
is to buy a new floppy.
Because of this I have following questions:
Does somebody know any other solution ?
Is it possibe to justate the head again ? How ?
Is there any adress distributing parts of floppies or apple-
compatible floppies ?
Thanks a lot in advance. Slawo

A few weeks ago I posted a request for info on converting .hqx files on a
system running VMS. I was refered to the comp.os.vms newsgroup, where I
reposted my request. They didn't have much insight into the problem and
thought that it was a Macintosh problem, but I was sent a program called
'xbin.' Xbin converts .hqx files, but it turns it into three files: an info
file, a rsc file and a data file. I have no idea what to do with these
converted files. Any ideas?
The solution I have come up with is to use a VMS version of Zip. With this
program I can compress .hqx files by about 27% and text files by 50-60%. This
greatly speeds up the downloading process, which was why I wanted to convert
the .hqx files.

An AppleTalk device can create a network storm. But then again, so can a
TCP/IP device or anything else.
The two most common causes of a network storm are:
1) The network being configured incorrectly, usually because of a lack of
knowledge on the administrator's part.
2) A hardware failure.
Needless to say, nothing can be done about #2 and that rarely happens. The
first case is the most common, but most network administrators who suffer
>From this problem usually blame it on AppleTalk, instead of their lack of
knowledge.
AppleTalk is a wonderful protocol. However, for it to work correctly, it
must be configured correctly.
>P.s. My concern is that my Macintosh (the only one on the net), running
>CAP on my Sun workstation, will start generating a storm and I'll be
>lynched.
An AppleTalk router does send out an RTMP packet every 10 seconds. The
next revision of AppleTalk routing - AppleTalk Update Routing Protocol
(AURP) will reduce that traffic even more by only sending out updates when
something has changed.
I've got a reference which tells the situations under which a network storm
can occur. I'll look it up and mail it to you tomorrow.

ATM can take up quite large amount of memory, depending on what you set its
cache to be. The size of the cache can be changed in the ATM control
panel. If you're using 3.0, the Font Subsitution will also increase the
amount of memory used by your System.
I hope this helps!

FolderIconMaker was written exactly for that purpose.
The icons created by FolderIconMaker are called "custom icons".
You can choose between these three options:
1) Place icon on new folder
(a new folder will be created)
2) Place icon on parent folder
(if parent folder is special, e.g. hard disk icon, then the icon
will be placed on the clipboard)
3) Place icon on clipboard
4) Anti-alias icons
5) Make white transparent
BTW:
What do 4) and 5) mean ?
Can somebody fill in the (email) address for the author ?
Sven :)

Subject: Formatting third-party hard drives with "Apple HD SC Setup"
The German computer magazine c't in '89 or so carried an article on
how to install an OEM hard drive in a Mac SE. For formatting your
hard drive you were supposed to use the formatting program that
comes with the system software. Since it wouldn't immediately re-
cognize the drive you would have to patch the program's "%A5Init"
code resource. Somewhere in the middle, the resource contains a list
of hard drive signatures. So, if you knew the signature of your OEM
drive, all you had to do was to replace one of another drive with
that of yours. Afterwards the formatting program would format your
drive without complaints as though it was one of the Apple ones.
Now, I can't reproduce this anymore. The list of drive signatures
is still present in System 7.1's formatting software. I know my
drive's signature from SCSIProbe. I patch the formatter, but my
drive still is not recognized. Has Apple changed the software to
include drive signature checksums or something?

Subject: How do I expand a ".pit" file? (A)
In 11-53, Fergus J. Lalor wonders how to use the Sumex file
font/dayton.hqx. I repeated the steps he describes and found one
difference: Stuffit Expander had no problem unbinhexing the file to
Dayton.pit (I used Expander version 3.0.1). Applying StuffIt Lite to unpack
the file did indeed produce a bunch of unreadable files. A quick look
through FileTyper 3.2 showed the reason: the files all unpack to files
with zero resource forks--with blank file types and blank creator types.
After assigning the ReadMeFirst file the type/creator of TEXT/R*ch, I could
open it in BBEdit and read it without problem. (The document files are
likely MacWrite--they're not straight text.) The author of these
mathematical fonts is Richard Mercer 1554 Bluebird Dr BeaverCreek, OH
45432, so that's where further questions should go. The PackIt ".pit"
format isn't seen much these days and this looks like a very old upload to
me based on the ReadMeFirst file, which advises a separate startup disk for
mathematical text using these fonts and advises that "standard quality"
printout is sufficient for printing the instructions. (That hints at a
creation date when the ImageWriter was the only printer for the Mac!)

You win. It is a "packit" file that Stuffit unpacks nicely.
Into that bunch of files. My Teachtext 1.2 (From the dark
ages of System 6. Wonder why I never replaced it?) reads
the README fine. SuitCase tells me that the font suitcase
is ancient, so I used Font/DA Mover 4.1 to copy from the old
suitcase into a new one. Came out OK. The documentation
was another matter. It looks to be an old MacWrite file
with WORD/MACA type/creator, but my decoders don't touch it.

A few digests ago, someone said that a virus (I didn't want to use the

likely culprit would be a trojan, which can also be nasty, but back to
the point.
I ALWAYS use Stuffit Expander (freeware from Alladin, makers of
Stuffit Deluxe and Stuffit Lite) to expand files that I download, even
self extracting files. If a virus is lurking in the self extracting
code, then it doesn't get a chance to execute and I can scan the
resulting files using Disinfectant (substitute your favorite virus

Most of the files I download are binhexed, and Stuffit Expander
automatically extracts files after de-binhexing them, so everything is
done in one step. I don't know why everyone doesn't use this great

He wrote that column just after System 7.1 was released at best, probably
before anyone had really had a chance at it, and well before the Centris
machines were even rumored. Remember the four month lead time? Besides,
if you read the column again, you'd see that he's really talking about
7.0, not 7.1 (since he mentions that 7.1 is supposed to be better
- about running dingy old shareware programs? Yeah right.). If you
also look back at that column, he's complaining about things like
confusing error messages that come from the programs, most notably
a Cancel or Script dialog that horrors, didn't have balloon help.
Of course not, John, that's not a System error, but an application
error and how can you expect an application written in 1985 to have
balloon help? And then he complains about how Apple doesn't automatically
set the monitor differently when a program requires a different bit
depth. This isn't Apple's problem - good applications like games from
Spectrum Holobyte, already do this. Get real. Oh and then there's
the complaint that Word crashes. I assume John's with it enough to
actually have updated to Word 4.0d, but I'm sure that going past that
to the version that's been out for the last year-plus is beyond him.
Of course Word crashes, and not because, as he snidely says, Apple
puts code in the Quadra so that Word crashes. It crashes because Microsoft
did a lousy job of writing it so that it can't handle the 040 caches.
They admitted their mistake and fixed it - 5.0 and 5.1 have no problem
in that area.

I expect real problems or at least something interesting from someone
who is supposed to have a finger on the industry.

Yeah, and he's grasping at the wrong straws in MacUser - there's plenty
in the Mac word to complain about, and System 7 compatibility with
old programs he hasn't bothered to update in the last 18 months
is not one of them.
> So maybe Adam needs to lighten up, der hey?
Nope, I'm sticking by my guns on this one. I'm more than willing to
acknowledge good, insightful writing such as most everything that
Steven Levy does in Macworld or Andy Ihknato's sarcastic columns in
MacUser, but Dvorak's been doing this for so long that he doesn't
seem to have anything even mildly interesting left to say. The man

I installed a new Apple ][e card in an LCIII (with the new "14" inch colour

This is just to say that like many others I've found MacInTax 10.01
unstable relative to other apps that I run under the same conditions.
In the course of doing a relatively simple return I had two crashes.
Fortunately, previous warnings on this list had wised me up to saving
frequently, so only one of the crashes lost data, and that only took
me 5 minutes to reenter. Still, this is not a good experience. I've
heard rumors that Chipsoft has an update to 10.01 for those who have
difficulties, but haven't received any official notification of this.
Anyway, if you're using MacInTax then I suggest that you too save
frequently. In particular, *never* complete a multiline itemization
window for a line on a form or schedule, return to the form or schedule,
and then make another choice from the menu. Save first, so that you preserve
your line itemization.

Subject: Mail Order Woes (A)
In 11-52, Alan Carney <acarney@encore.com> tells about his reluctance to
give a credit card number to an unknown business over the phone.
Actually, giving a credit card number is just about the ONLY safe way to
place an order with an unknown business. The simple truth is:
a) It's easy to get anybody's credit card numbers. Millions of businesses
have access to credit reports of any individual on request. Every business
that accepts credit cards has records of all such purchases and the numbers
involved.
b) If someone uses your credit card number without your authorization AND
without the actual card in hand, you simply tell the issuing bank and the
charge is reversed. There is NO time limit, no "catch" and no problem--and
it's a matter of law. Just be sure to use the phrase "unauthorized charge"
when you write, to distinguish the problem from some billing error in a
transaction you really did place.
c) If you actually do authorize a purchase and something goes wrong
(failure to deliver, quality problem) the credit card company will act
quickly on your written complaint (within 60 days of billing) and, in
almost all cases, will simply reverse the charge, clearing your account and
telling the merchant to work out the problem. The banks almost always take
the side of the consumer in any dispute; the banks just don't want to get
involved in such problems.
You're fully protected against misuse of your credit card number. The banks
aren't; the merchants can get stuck; but you, as a consumer, have nothing
to worry about. Don't sweat it.

Subject: Maxima, Finder Palette and Vanishing Icons (Q)
I've been looking at Maxima, the Ram Disk program from Connectix. I'm
using it to create an 8meg ram disk holding my system folder. It's
very successful except for one problem. I also use Finder Palette,
which creates a strip of icons of frequently used applications. You
launch the app by double-clicking its icon. I believe the idea came
>From NeXT. It's convenient, and FP is aesthetically pleasing.
The problem, as you may already have guessed, is that Maxima somehow
causes FP to lose its icons (except for the Finder icon) and to display
a strip with generic icons instead, thereby defeating the visual point of
the program. I thought initially that the problem was that Maxima
rebuilds the ram disk desktop every time the machine starts up, but the icons
don't survive reboots either, when the desktop isn't rebuilt.
I tried moving FP out of StartUp Items and replacing it with an alias.
Didn't help. So then I moved it to another disk and put it in a folder
along with its prefs file. Launching it by double-clicking that prefs
file still doesn't help.
I find that, in order to restore the icons, it sometimes isn't sufficient
just to reselect the app. This just puts another generic icon into the
strip. I have to Get Info on the app, and copy and paste its icon in
the Get Info window. This resets something that's being messed up by
Maxima.
(1) Can anyone suggest a solution that allows me to continue to use FP
and Maxima?
(2) If not, does anyone know of another app (other than Launchqc) which
does what FP does? I recall reading about two in the usual mags. One was
>From a company called PBM Software, but that's all I remember, and the other
I can't remember anything about at all.

If I remember correctly from Tom Thompson's researches, OmegaSANE
is in the ROMs of the Quadras and PowerBooks that were released in
Oct-92 and all subsequent machines. That's why it's not in 7.1, in
part, I suspect. In addition, Tom indicated that the machines that
were 32-bit dirty (just to lump them together, not to indicate that
being 32-bit dirty is related) don't benefit from Omega SANE, which
leaves what, the IIsi, IIci, IIfx, and maybe the LC and LC II, (can
they both take coprocessors? I don't have my documentation handy.)
So the upshot is that you can have fun playing with ResEdit, but unless
you have a IIsi (with coprocessor), IIci, or IIfx, AND you run FPU
intensive programs like CAD or modeling or heavy-duty spreadsheets,
don't bother...

Subject: Optical Mice,
Moderator, I don't know how to reply to the questions posted
in the IM digest, and since I haven't seen a reply to the optical
mice question in INFOMACV11-047.TXT, here is my reply.
I use an optical mouse for over a year now and love it. It is a one button
mouse from Mouse Systems, and cost me $78 (US$). It is worth every penny
and then some.
Here are some Pros:
1. I can navigate all over my 19" screen without having to move my arm, and
without having to pick up the mouse to get another run at it. Only my wrist
twists and fingers move.
2. The positioning is very accurate and preditable, unlike the standard
Apple mouse with a ball.
3. The device is very light (no pun intended).
Here are some Cons:
1. The button on my model is a bit large, leading to superfluous clicks
if you often switch between a standard and this optical mouse.
It took about a week for me to totally eliminate the superfluous clicks, but I
now can and do switch often between other Macs with regular mice and my Mac
with
an optical mouse.
2. The pad must be perpendicular to the mouse, otherwise the mouse movement
is
somewhat unintuitive. (Of course, without the pad, no motion would occur,
since
it needs to detect the gridlines.)
3. I wear on a ring on my pinky finger, and it scuffs the pad, but I have had
no
tracking problems as a result.
So overall, if you want precise, predictable placement of the mouse,
an optical mouse is the way to go. The learning curve is short.
Good luck...

Subject: Privacy of Wealth Builder
I recently bought Wealth Builder which, among other things, provides an
interface to the financial database of Reality Technologies. I feel a little
funny about using the system, however, because the only way to access the
on-line database is through Wealth Builder's communications tool. Before you
can sign up, Wealth Builder asks for a bunch of information, including birth
date, address, phone number, and social security number. I aksed them why they
need this stuff and got no real answer, but presumably it is all uploaded to
them when I log on. So, I'm wondering what they do with it. They claim over
the
phone (but not in writing) that they keep it confidential.
OK, so maybe this data isn't so secret anyway, but I got to thinking about how
the communications tool gives them ready access not only to this sign-up
information but also to every other financial record that I enter into the
financial planning and analysis portion of the program. This is an awfully
tempting target for anybody with something to sell.
Does my data (including, for that matter, anything else on my drive) have any
legal protection from this sort of scenario? Has anyone seen similar questions
come up?

Subject: Quadra 800 SIMM $$$
I have been looking around for Quadra 800 SIMMs and the best price
I have been able to find is $289 for 60ns, 8MB SIMMs. Has anyone
been able to find them any cheaper than that? If so, where?
In addition, I have a 230 MB HD with the Quadra. Is there (I have
heard that there is) an optimal size for partitions to keep the
minimum file size at a reasonable level? I have seen this question
bantered (sp?) about, but have never seen the answer posted.
Thank you.

Subject: Recommendations requested for PB100 modem in Ecuador (Q)
My brother-in-law is looking for advice on a data/fax modem for his
Powerbook 100. It would be advantageous if the modem were internal,
for portability reasons. The real kicker is that he wants to use it
in Loja, Ecuador (assuming he gets a phone hooked up before coming
back in 5 years). My surmise is that this would call for a solid
modem that was _very_ tolerant of line noise. He thinks he's willing
to live with low speed (i.e., 2400 bps data, 4800-9600 fax).
Despite trying to follow these newsgroups, I'm not aware of a
consensus in these matters. I would especially like to hear from
anyone with experience with fax/data connections in Ecuador, and also
whether it would be possible to acheive Internet or even Compuserve
connections from Loja.
Thanks in advance

Subject: Request for LC III benchmarks
Could somebody with an LC III be kind enough to run speedometer
tests on it and post the results to the net? The recently posted
speedometer results file included results for an accelerated LC, so
getting comparable results for an LC III would help us decide whether
to get the Apple upgrade, or to get third-party accelerators.

This sounds serious. Can any one supply more specific details about this
bug and the conditions under which it causes trouble? Does it affect all
Macs, or just certain models?

Subject: SCSI & CD-300i
When hooking a tape drive (in addition to an external drive) to my IIvi, I
noticed that the usual rules of SCSI (an oxymoron?) didn't seem to apply: the
SCSI ports were not equal. When I hooked everything up one way, the external
drive wouldn't mount, but when I changed around the connections on the tape
drive, everything worked fine.
A fried of mine who just added an external CD-300i to his system had similar
problems.
Is this a known bug, or a feature, of just wild coincidence from the wonderful
world of SCSI?

Update of Scanman 2.1 [Q]
I own a handy scanner from Logitech and I've an old version of Scanman (v
2.1) driver and software for this scanner, which is not system 7
compatible. As I'm tired of having to 'system-switch-restart', i'm looking
for an newer version of this soft.
Is there a new version system 7 compatible ?
Where can I reach logitech for an update ?
Who could provide me this new version ? (Which is only usefull with a
scanner, so it must be 'public-domain-like')
Thank you for your help,

When I got my update from MicroSoft a couple of months ago, it was already
5.1a, so the extra step shouldn't be needed for anyone ordering today ...

IMHO, the upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 was as nifty as, or niftier than,
the upgrade from 4 to 5.0. New features include the Toolkit (or Tool-
box or whatever they call that thing), a string of buttons in which
you can store your most frequently used Word commands, making it
possible to access such things as borders, formats, case changes,
etc., by just clicking on a ribbon button. User customizable and
fabulous. Also, a handy 'comment' feature (again, I'm not sure what
Word's official name is), whereby you can enter editorial or proofing
remarks or comments on a document as you read it, and the person you
send the document to sees an indicator at that point in the text and
can call up your comments, but they don't print as part of the doc
unless you want them to.( Did that shining example of English construc-
tion make sense?;)). There are some other new features that don't come
right to mind, since these two impressed me the most.
Anyway, I strongly recommend the upgrade. We had to pay for it but it
wasn't very much, seems like around $15.00. Worth every penny.
